If you’re not being seen as a business, you’re seriously holding yourself back. It’s not enough to rely on directory and newspaper advertising, particularly because it’s much harder to sell to the public these days. Consumers hear about (or have had the unfortunate circumstance of being) victims of fraud, and you must either show, prove or make an impression of a good quality service.
This article outlines the different types of promotions you can implement to ensure you’re actively working on increasing awareness for your business:
- Joint Ventures
A joint venture is a contractual agreement joining together two or more parties for the purpose of executing a particular business undertaking – sharing risk, expertise and new or existing custom. When properly chosen and implemented, joint ventures can be a great opportunity for all stakeholders to gain increased exposure and custom that may otherwise have not been accessible. There are lots of different ways to joint venture with others so you must ensure that you weigh out gains for all participants. Please make sure that the people you joint venture with are trustworthy people who deliver the service or product promised; remember that by working with others, your services will be associated with them and if they deliver a bad service, it will look bad on you too.
If you do decide to get involved in a joint venture, please ensure you record all of your conversations and get some documentation together so everyone knows what is expected of them.
- Networking
Networking in this instance is defined as communicating with and within groups; for example, if you go to an event relevant to your industry, meet plenty of people from different companies and perhaps you all exchange business details, you are creating awareness while networking.
You don’t have to meet people face-to-face to be networking however, may be you’re already networking on the internet? Facebook, MySpace, discussion forums and blogs are all different forms of internet networks, and lets face it – the internet is one big network – but all these forms of discussion in relevant groups can be used to assist others, yourself, and/or promote your business.
The beauty of networking is that meeting people with similar interests can give you
a great confidence boost, particularly if you’re encountering or have encountered the same troubles as them! People you get to know can also use, mention, recommend or suggest your services should the need come up in their day-to-day business dealings, and perhaps you might do the same for them.
New associates can often share some of their valuable knowledge with you, and you may not realise it, but you will probably be able to offer real value to them too. Why not find out what’s going on in your area?
- Complimentary products or services
Complimentary products or services are products/services which would sell well with each one another and could be brought or sold as a package deal, making it more attractive and increasing potential revenue; for example, computers are often sold with security software because it makes sense, the products are so closely related and the two coming together for better value is a must have deal! Combinations like the one above can be made across lots of industries and can be very beneficial for the consumer as well as the seller(s).
There are lots of ways to look into complimentary products, whether you offer the product/service yourself, you work with another company or become an affiliate for others, just make sure you know the product/service or people inside out. - Press Releases
A press release is an announcement of an event, performance or other newsworthy item distributed to members of the press. Press Releases can be an easy and cost-free way to gain exposure to potential customers. Press Releases were traditionally exposed through Newspapers, but with our ever changing world the internet is also an additional source of exposure which has endless possibilities to drive more traffic to your business or website. There are so many opportunities for distributing your news, targeted, national and international, but I really don’t want to list them all! One example of a controlled article site for you is: www.ezinearticles.com and the browsers can decide what is and isn’t good content!
Of course you can also contact relevant magazine editors if you feel they would be interested in your news. In these instances it is always advisable to contact the relevant editors wherever possible before sending your work to them so they have a higher chance of remembering you when they do receive your news piece(s). If you can, try and find out when their deadlines are and don’t even think about contacting them just before or on their deadline!!! Now perhaps you like the idea of press releases, but you can’t think of anything to talk about? All circumstances are different, but if you have something good or new to offer consumers, the chances are it could be interesting for readers and a newsworthy story could be created from it. If you struggle to write articles or you’re stuck for ideas, there’s help at hand! There are so many sources of article writers on the internet, or you can lookh for existing subjects of interest in your niche topic through forum research or article research; this will help you to assess consumer needs and problems.
Articles don’t have to be long; in fact you need your articles to be to the point and probably no longer than 350-450 words. Try looking in discussion forums for recommendations or even ideas. Always double check your work and language settings (American/English), also looking out for common computer mistakes which aren’t picked up or even words that sound the same but are spelt differently: here/hear, know/now
